In 2010 the Foundation began discussions with the City of Melbourne regarding recognition of John Truscott within the city. This was particularly influenced by the capacity that Truscott brought to Melbourne Festivals, particularly on occasions such as Botanica.

Discussions with the Council led to the opportunity for the Foundation and the Council to provide illumination to the Coles Fountain in the Parliamentary Gardens in Spring Street. The Foundation contributed half the costs of alteration to the Fountain which is now active, adding a wondrous night element to that part of the gardens directly opposite the Princess Theatre.

A Place in the City

The ‘Place in the City Awards’ recognise excellence in design across a broad canvas of visual influence, involvement and enjoyment for the benefit of city residents, commuters, visitors and the wider community.

Importantly, there is no singular prescription for an award selection other than the evidence of a positive impact on the liveability of the city. Size, location, form and any prior recognition have no bearing on the award. This is illustrated by the diversity in concept and scale of the recipients.
